Amazon EPR: what Amazon asks for, and why
Last checked · 4 min read
Amazon EPR requirements kick in as soon as you sell in Germany or France: Amazon asks for your EPR registration numbers, and without them it can deactivate your listings in those countries. That is because the law in both countries makes marketplaces responsible for checking. This guide explains which numbers Amazon asks for per country, where you enter them, and what Amazon does not check for you.
- +Germany: your LUCID registration number for packaging, and your WEEE-Reg.-Nr. if you sell electronics.
- +France: a UIN per product type you sell: packaging, and where relevant electronics, batteries, textiles, furniture and more.
- +You enter the numbers in the EPR compliance section of Seller Central. If they are missing, Amazon can deactivate listings or comply on your behalf.
- +With FBA and Pan-EU, what counts is the country where your customer receives the parcel, not where Amazon stores your stock.
Why Amazon asks for your EPR number
In Germany, since 1 July 2022, marketplaces must check that sellers are registered for their packaging, and a similar duty applies to electronics. In France a marketplace must collect its sellers' UINs, or contribute for them itself. Amazon cannot leave that risk lying around: without your number, Amazon itself is in breach.
Amazon says on its own EPR page that it may deactivate non-compliant listings, or comply on your behalf. Under the PPWR the second is no longer a solution: since 12 August 2026 marketplaces must check that their sellers hold their own registration, so a payment made on your behalf does not replace your registration number.
Which EPR numbers Amazon asks for, per country
| Country | Product type | Number | Where you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Germany | Packaging | LUCID registration number | LUCID, free |
| Germany | Electronics | WEEE-Reg.-Nr. DE | stiftung ear |
| France | Packaging | Packaging UIN | Citeo or Léko |
| France | Electronics, batteries, textiles, furniture and more | One UIN per product type | That type's eco-organisation; see France |
Amazon's EPR page also covers Austria and states that EPR applies if you sell in any European country. Now that the EU PPWR requires registration in every member state, it is sensible to assume Amazon will extend the list of countries it asks numbers for.
Where to enter the numbers
In Seller Central you enter your numbers on the compliance information page for Extended Producer Responsibility. Per country and product type you provide the registration number; Amazon checks that it exists and that the name matches your seller account.
FBA and Pan-EU: where are you the producer?
With Pan-EU, Amazon spreads your stock over warehouses in Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Poland, the Czech Republic and more. For EPR, the warehouse location does not matter. What counts is where the customer receiving the parcel lives: sell through Amazon.fr to a French customer and that is French packaging and French electronics, even if the parcel ships from a German warehouse.
The shipping box changed on 12 August 2026. Under the old German act, the FBA seller counted as the producer of the shipping box Amazon uses. Under the PPWR, Amazon is the producer of shipping boxes carrying its brand, and Amazon has announced it will take over EPR compliance for the shipping and transport packaging it adds in FBA. Your product packaging always stays your responsibility, with FBA just as with your own shipping.
What Amazon does not check for you
An accepted number only means you are registered. Amazon does not check whether you have a dual system contract in Germany, whether your kilograms are right or whether you declare on time. That stays your responsibility, and it is what regulators look at.
For that you need your Amazon sales per country, joined to the packaging weight per product. Amazon gives you order reports, not kilograms. How to get from one to the other is in calculating packaging weight.
Frequently asked questions
Which EPR number does Amazon ask for in Germany?
For packaging, your LUCID registration number; for electronics, your WEEE registration number from stiftung ear.
Which EPR number does Amazon ask for in France?
A UIN (identifiant unique) per product type you are the producer of, starting with packaging. You get each one from that type's eco-organisation.
What happens if I do not enter an EPR number?
Amazon can deactivate your listings in that country or comply on your behalf.
I sell through FBA. Do I still need to register myself?
Yes. Since 12 August 2026 Amazon takes on the shipping box it adds in FBA, but your product packaging stays yours. For that you register in every country your customers live in.
Is an Amazon EPR number the same as a VAT number?
No. VAT and EPR are separate. A German VAT registration says nothing about your LUCID registration, and vice versa.
